About Us
Tony Knight and Paul Gibbins first established their clockmaking business in
the East End of London. They had both trained to be designers and makers of
furniture, learning their practical skills first at school in the 1950's when
woodwork was still part of the school curriculum, and later at college in
London under the guidance of skilled craftsman - journeymen cabinetmakers of
the 'old school'. A shared fascination for timepieces led them in 1972 to form
a partnership and re-direct their combined skills towards clockcase making, a
trade that evolved in the 17th century when longcase clocks first appeared. The
move to their present workshops in Sudbury, an ancient market town in Suffolk,
took place in 1977. The company has remained small.
Tony
Knight and Paul Gibbins believe that to maintain the superlative quality with
which their names are synonymous it is vital that they remain in close personal
control and they still spend many hours of the week at the bench, both from
necessity and also they would admit, from choice.
